USRobotics' Sportster 1200 modem is the new choice for today's "smart
money" shopper. The $149.00 Sportster 1200 offers a combination of price,
performance, and value that other 1200/300 bps modems can't match.
The Sportster 1200 is a fully-featured modem at an entry-level price that
should appeal to professional and home PC users who don't require 2400 bps or
higher speeds.
The auto-dial, auto answer Sportster 1200 accepts the full, industry-
standard "AT" modem command and "S-Register" set, making it compatible with
virtually all popular data communications software.
Designed for use on dial-up, voice-grade phone lines, Sportster 1200 is
compatible with Bell 212A at 1200 bps and Bell 103/113 at 300 bps. It can be
connected with any personal computer or data terminal equipped with an RS-232-
C serial interface.
Two RJ11C phone jacks on the modem permit the user to connect a telephone
to the modem, using the same phone line for voice or data.
Sportster 1200 reports on the status of a call in progress with on-screen
messages such as "no dial tone," "busy," "no answer," "ringing," and "voice
answer." It can automatically redial a busy number up to ten times. Four LED
indicators monitor transmitted data, received data, test mode, and carrier
detect. A thumbwheel switch provides graduated control of an on-board
speaker for audio phone line monitoring.
Like USRobotics more expensive "COURIER" modems, the Sportster 1200
carries a printed operations summary on its bottom panel -- making quick
reference by users a snap. It also includes a user's guide, a quick-reference
card, an AC power adaptor, and an RJ11C phone cord.
USRobotics provides free parts and service coverage under a two-year
warranty. The original purchaser also may buy a two-year warranty extension
for $15.00

NUMERIC/VERBAL CODE MEANING
0/OK Command has been executed.
1/CONNECT Connection successfully made; if X1 or X2 is set,
connection is at 300 bps.
2/RING Incoming call when modem set to Auto Answer.
3/NO CARRIER Hung up because attempt to connect failed or call
was disconnected.
4/ERROR Invalid command.
5/CONNECT 1200 Connection successfully made at 1200 bps.
6/NO DIAL TONE Hanging up; no dial tone.
7/BUSY Hanging up; busy signal.
11/RINGING Dialed and remote phone is ringing.
12/VOICE Hanging up; voice answered.

S-REGISTERS SUPPORTED
______________________________________________________________________________
REGISTER DEFAULT FUNCTION
S0 S0=0 Sets the number of rings on which to answer when
or DIP #5 in Auto Answer Mode
S1 S1=0 Counts and stores the number of rings from
S2 S2=43 Sets the ASCII decimal code for the escape code
character. Default character is "+". A value of
128-255 disables the escape code.
S3 S3=13 Sets the ASCII decimal code for the Carriage
Return character
S4 S4=10 Sets the ASCII decimal code for the Line Feed
character
S5 S5=8 Sets the ASCII decimal code for the Backspace
character. A value of 128-255 disables the
backspace key's delete function.
S6 S6=2 Sets the number of seconds the modem waits before
dialing. If set below two, the modem resets S6 to
2, due to phone company limitations. If the modem
is set to X2, the modem ignores S6 and dials as
soon as it detects a dial tone (fast dial)
S7 S7=30 Sets the number of seconds the modem waits for a
carrier. May be set for much longer duration if,
for example, the modem is originating an
international connection.
S8 S8=2 Sets the duration , in seconds, for the pause (,)
option in the Dial command
S9 S9=6 Sets the required duration of the remote modem's
carrier signal, in tenths of a second, before
recognition (Carrier Detect Time)
S10 S10=7 Sets the duration, in tenths of a second, the
modem waits after loss of carrier before hanging
up. While we don't recommend use of call waiting
on data lines, if you use call waiting you may
want to set this register higher to prevent the
modem from interpreting a signal for a second call
as a disconnect from the remote modem.
S11 S11=70 Sets the duration and spacing, in milliseconds, of
dialed Touch-Tones.
S12 S12=50 Sets the duration, in fiftieths of a second, of
the guard time for the escape code sequence. Must
be value between 1 and 255.
S16 S16=0 Modem self-test. Set to 0 for Data Mode; set to 1
for Analog Loopback Test
